Our Story

“Gharna” translates to “our laurel” in Arabic, while “Halabi” alludes to the origin of this soap, rooted in the city of Aleppo.
Launched in 2018, Gharna Halabi was established to highlight the rich heritage and civilization of Aleppo, particularly amidst the recent civil war that engulfed the city. It also serves as a testament to this unique industry, tracing its origins back to 2000 B.C.

In a market teeming with many imitation products resembling the renowned Aleppo soap, the Gharna Halabi team felt compelled to return to authenticity. They sought to provide genuine, natural, handmade Aleppo laurel soap products, sourced directly from the soap factories of Aleppo and delivered to consumers. This endeavor ensures that customers receive an authentic product, with the added personal touch of our team in the packaging. As the name suggests, Gharna Halabi is deeply committed to embracing nature and safeguarding the environment, opting for handcrafted techniques over machinery.

Aleppo Soap

Soap-making is claimed to have reached the West from the Levant after the First Crusade, but in fact soap was known to the Romans in the 1st century AD, and Zosimus of Panopolis wrote about soap and soap-making in BC. Described. 300 AD. Today, most Aleppo soaps, especially those containing more than 16% bay oil, are exported to Europe and East Asia.

About Aleppo

Aleppo consists of an old and a new town; the former is enclosed by a medieval wall. Among the most important buildings are the modern citadel, surrounded by a moat and standing on a ahill 61 m high, and the Mosque of Zacharias, said to contain the tomb of John the Baptist’s father. Also in Aleppo are a number of European schools, Christian churches, and missions. The University of Aleppo was founded in 1960. In the 3rd century AD, Aleppo became the most important centre of trade between Europe and the Orient. The history of the city, which was a Hittite settlement before 1000 BC, parallels that of Syria. The old part of Aleppo was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
